Closer is a deeply poignant album. I can't really listen to it at all these days, it takes far too much out of me. The last two songs "The Eternal" & "Decades" are............gut-wrenchingly painful. Oh Jesus, am I turning into Paul Morley here?
The last hour tracks - in fact - are faultless. Heart and Soul is one of my all time favourite songs. I'm a sucker for brilliant basslines and it's interesting to note that the tone of this particular one is much lower than the signature Hook sound.
The album would piss all over Unknown Pleasures if it weren't for the compartively weak opening track 'Atrocity Exhibition'. The lyrics are quite powerful granted, I just don't really get the song. Other than that I can't really recommend this album enough. It'll render you a wreck if you are anything like me.
